Spooky pest control stories from the field
Halloween isn’t just about fun costumes and pumpkin spice; it’s also the perfect time to remember that the real horrors can lurk in the corners of your home. Our Terminix technicians have seen it all, from rodents the size of small dogs to mysterious whispers in the attic. This Halloween, we’re sharing some of the most spine-chilling pest control stories our team has experienced.
A 22-pound basement horror
Richard Alamat, Regional Account Executive, shared a story from treating a home in Berkeley, Michigan, that began with a mysterious odor and turned into something unforgettable. “When I arrived, the smell in the basement was overwhelming,” Alamat said. “To pinpoint the source, I followed the strongest part of the scent and traced it to the ceiling.”
After carefully cutting into the drywall, the mystery shockingly revealed itself. “Out fell a 22-pound rat. When it hit the concrete floor, it landed with a thud you could feel. The smell was beyond awful.” The oversized rodent had spent its final days tucked above the ceiling, unnoticed until the odor gave it away. Situations like this show how rat control can help uncover what’s lurking in the least expected places.

Millions of bed bugs in Arkansas
Eric Braun, Terminix Technical Service Manager, shared that one of the worst bed bug infestations he has seen was in an unsuspecting place. “In Arkansas, we encountered a nightmare at a poultry production facility, where the issue had escalated to a terrifying degree. Millions of bed bugs infested the equipment and crawled all over the live chickens. It was a massive, sickening sight that proves the threat of bed bugs is far greater than most people can imagine,” Braun mentioned.
These pests hide anywhere, spread fast, and don’t wait for an invitation. Braun shared, “I've found them harboring under toenails, underneath toilet seats, and even packed inside a TV, everyday places you’d never suspect.” Bed bug control isn’t just about comfort; it’s about stopping an invisible enemy before it explodes into a homegrown nightmare.
The bat nightmare in Central Illinois
During what appeared to be a routine bat removal visit, Bryant Galvin, one of our Field Technicians, shares a pest control story that seems straight out of a gothic tale. In central Illinois, near a large lake, a homeowner assumed birds had taken over their attic…but the truth was far more sinister.
Galvin shared, “As soon as we entered, the odor of bat guano hit us like a wall. Looking out the second-story window, the porch was covered in guano—enough to fill two 5-gallon buckets. When we opened the attic access, bats swarmed overhead, and piles of guano had replaced most of the insulation. Hundreds, maybe over a thousand bats, were hanging off one another.” What seemed like a minor annoyance for these homeowners quickly turned into an unexpected full-blown infestation.
